The review article presented by the authors is devoted to the comprehensive coverage of the XVIII Kovalevsky readings All- Russian scientific conference held on November 14–16, 2024 at St. Petersburg state university. The topic of these readings was “Sociology in a changing world: theory, practice, education”. These readings were timed to coincide with important milestones, namely the 300 th anniversary of St. Petersburg state university and the 35 th anniversary of sociological education in Russia. The conference presented the results of the latest research covering a wide range of sociological areas. Special attention was paid to the methodology of sociological research, the adaptation of sociological theory to the realities of modern society, as well as the role of sociology in the educational process and the formation of professional competencies of future sociologists. Important topics of discussion were: the transformation of social institutions, the impact of digital technologies on social processes, problems of social stratification and inequality, issues of identity and cultural diversity, as well as the role of sociology in solving urgent social problems which Russian society faces.
